Title | The Tourist's Guide: a Hand Book of the Trip from Leicester, Nottingham, and Derby to Liverpool and the Coast of North Wales |
Date | 1845 |
Document type | Guidebook |
Description | This is the guide to Cook's first commercial trip (i.e. one that wasn't organised for a Sunday school, or local group). The trip organised travel, but not accommodation (though Cook does include some suggestions). It contains many advertisements at the back for Temperance Hotels and coffee houses, revealing Thomas Cook's original ambitions, and his attempts to influence travellers. The guide gives a personal (Cook uses the pronoun "I" often) description of the areas travelled through, including notes on wildlife ("wild rabbits, and puffins which congregate here in vast numbers") and the history of locations. Cook also suggests songs and rhymes to be sung along the route. |
