Description The first edition of this directory was published in 1861, with "the view of explaining and promoting the System of Tours then in operation" in the area. The directory describes different routes that can be taken, and provides "passing glimpses" of sights along the way. Sections are split into "Routes and Travelling Arrangements", "Topographical and Descriptive Notes", and then itineraries for Cook tours. The Appendix contains an article written by Thomas Cook, "Twenty Six Years on the Rails: A Personal History". Cook describes his first tour, and the development of his business.
