Title | Diary of an Eastern Tour |
Author/Creator | Shave, Charles H |
Date | 17 Mar-23 Apr 1903 |
Document type | Travel Journal |
Description | Mostly consists of letters sent to the Cleckheaton Guardian by the pastor of Providence-place Congregational Church, Rev. C. H. Shave, who took a tour of the Middle East in March and April 1903, and also a number of photographs of the touring party and of the region, perhaps taken by Shave himself. Presented in a scrapbook style, but reads like a journal as Shave documents his journey for his paritioners through his letters to the local paper, all the way from Paris to the Holy Land. Despite his position as a religious man, the observations made are varied, about the landscape, the weather, the architecture, the history, and the often disorienting experience of being in foreign climes for the first time, and he also seems open minded to the variety of religious traditions on display, though obviously utilising many Biblical allusions and frequently underlining the supremacy of the Bible. His journal covers Paris, Corsica, Marseilles, Vesuvius, Naples, Athens, Beirut, and Constantinople as well as the Holy Land itself. Also includes similar letters to a newspaper written by anoter member of Shave's party, E. G. Harmer. Later in the scrapbook there are assorted notes and later newspaper clippings about the Holy Land. |
