Title Post-war Tourist Industry
Date 2 Aug 1944 - 18 Apr 1946
Document type Government Records; Correspondence
Description Numerous and diverse papers relating to the postwar tourist industry, setting the fact that "the expenditure of tourists in this country in due course could be increased by a fairly large sum if the necessary amenities are provided and properly advertised" against the fact that hotel, shipping, port, and transport facilities have still not fully recovered, and that the government will also need to make reciprocal provisions for British people to travel abroad. Issues discussed include assistance to be given to the Travel Association, findings of the Catering Wages Commission (whose report is included twice), the possibility of 'austerity tours' for US visitors, the rehabilitation of hotels, potential ways of administering tourism through new bodies, budgeting for publicity abroad, and the formation and meetings of an inter-departmental committee on tourism. There are also newspaper clippings discussing the value of tourism to the economy, and there is a booklet on trade planning and one entitled 'Britain – Destination of Tourists?'
